What "offline" should actually mean
Plenty of budgeting apps call themselves offline because they cache a few screens while your phone is in a tunnel. Your data still lives on their servers, you still need an account, and the app stops being useful the day the company changes its pricing or shuts down.
Money Map takes the literal approach. The whole app is one HTML file. You save it to your computer and open it in your browser. There is no installer, no sign-up screen and no server on the other end. Your transactions are stored in your browser's local database on your own machine, and nothing is sent anywhere.
Who an offline budget app is for
- Privacy-minded people who don't want a third party holding a complete map of where their money goes.
- People who don't want to hand over bank credentials to an aggregator just to see their own spending.
- Spreadsheet budgeters who are tired of rebuilding formulas every month but don't want a cloud service.
- Anyone outside the US whose bank isn't supported by the usual sync providers. If your bank can export a CSV or Excel file, Money Map can read it.
- People with subscription fatigue. Money Map is a one-time purchase.
What you can do with it
Import statements from any bank
Download a CSV or XLSX statement from your bank's website and drop it in. You map the columns once (date, description, amount, or separate debit and credit columns) and save the mapping as a template, so next month's import takes seconds. If you import an overlapping date range by accident, duplicates are skipped.
Categorize automatically
Create rules that match on vendor text, such as "contains", "equals" or a regular expression, and Money Map assigns categories for you on every future import. You spend your time reviewing, not retyping.
Budget vs actual, your way
Set a budget for each category and see actual spending against it. Choose how unspent money behaves: envelope rollover, where leftover money carries into next month, or monthly reset, where every month starts fresh.
See where the month is heading
The month-end forecast combines what you've already spent, your upcoming fixed costs and expected variable spending, so you know mid-month whether you're on track.
Track recurring expenses
Keep a list of rent, subscriptions, insurance and other repeating costs, and see them in your plan before they hit.
Back up with encryption
Export a backup file whenever you like and store it wherever you like: a USB drive, an external disk or your own cloud folder. You can optionally encrypt it with a passphrase using AES-GCM via your browser's built-in Web Crypto.
Try it before you buy
The demo runs in your browser with sample data. No signup, no email.

Offline vs cloud budgeting: the honest trade-offs
| Money Map (offline file) | Typical cloud budget app | |
|---|---|---|
| Where data lives | Your computer only | The vendor's servers |
| Account needed | No | Yes |
| Bank login | Never. You import files. | Usually, via an aggregator |
| Automatic transaction sync | No (by design) | Yes, when the connection works |
| Phone app / multi-device sync | No | Yes |
| Price | $29 once | Usually a yearly subscription |
The main cost of going offline is the manual step: once a week or once a month you download a statement and import it. Many people find that this short review is exactly what keeps them engaged with their budget. If you want transactions to appear on your phone automatically, a cloud app is a better fit, and we'd rather tell you that up front.

- Export an encrypted backup and put it somewhere safe.
Supported browsers
Money Map is tested on Windows with Chrome and Edge, and that's what we recommend. Mac and Safari are not tested, so we don't claim support for them.
Built by one person
Money Map is built by Sam Bolchen, a solo developer. There's no venture funding and no growth team pushing for upsells. You pay once and own your copy. If it isn't right for you, you have a 14-day refund window.
